A family in Nandi County is grappling with unimaginable grief following the tragic death of their son in Finland, barely a year after losing their daughter in a fatal accident in Australia.
Eugine Kipkoech, who had been living in Karkila, Finland, was reported missing on Friday, March 7. His lifeless body was discovered in a nearby lake the following night, sending shockwaves through his family and friends, according to the Kenyan Diaspora Media.
Eugine was the brother of Sheila Jeptum, a young Kenyan woman who tragically lost her life in a devastating road accident in Australia last year.
Jeptum, 21, died when the Hyundai Elantra she was traveling in veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with another vehicle, killing both drivers on the spot. Her sudden passing deeply affected the Kenyan community, both at home and abroad, with a candlelight vigil held in her honor.
Now, as the family continues to mourn Sheila’s untimely demise, they are confronted with yet another heartbreaking tragedy.
“The family lost their daughter last year during the same month. They were still struggling to heal, and now they are faced with another painful loss,” read a post by Lemiso Media House.
Kenyans online expressed their deep condolences, with many struggling to comprehend the family’s immense sorrow.
“I can’t imagine the depth of their grief. Losing one child is devastating, but enduring such tragedy twice, in foreign lands, is beyond comprehension,” wrote Lucy Chemutai.
Another mourner, Chebet Birech, shared her sympathies: “I can’t imagine what Mama Shillah is going through right now. My deepest condolences to the family. Rest in peace, Eugine.”
Caroline Chepchumba, who has experienced similar pain, added, “So heartbreaking. This happened to me in 2023—I lost three of my close relatives in one year.”
Meanwhile, Finnish authorities have launched an investigation into Eugine’s death to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, as the devastated family struggles to come to terms with their second heartbreaking loss in less than a year.
