Jakarta – Toyota, the renowned Japanese automaker, has always found innovative ways to cater to its customers and car enthusiasts worldwide. In its latest move, the world’s largest car manufacturer is reportedly planning to introduce a special edition model designed specifically for track racing.

The company has confirmed that one of its models will be included in the GR racing lineup, specifically engineered for track performance, as part of the prestigious Supercars Championship—the premier motorsport competition in Australia—next year. This special model is expected to feature a GR Supra with a V8 engine.

Sean Hanley, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota Australia, stated that the company is open to the possibility of launching race-track-specific cars in limited numbers.

“Of course, there is an opportunity for the GR brand to explore new avenues related to competition. We will take a more comprehensive approach to brand development,” Hanley said, as quoted by Drive on Saturday, March 8.

However, Hanley clarified that the upcoming model would not be the Supra, as speculated, but another high-performance vehicle carrying the “GR” badge.

“In other words, we might develop some special track editions—not always the Supra—but potentially other models under the GR brand,” he added.

He also hinted at the possibility of assembling the high-performance model locally, emphasizing that it would not be a GR Sport variant, which primarily focuses on visual enhancements.

“Our priority right now is to stay on this path, prepare ourselves, and complete the Supercars program and development. Then, we can evaluate what steps to take next from a brand perspective,” Hanley explained.

Toyota has already introduced the GR Supra for the 2026 Supercars Championship, partnering with Walkinshaw Andretti United as a homologation team. The manufacturer has equipped the model with a 5.0-liter 2UR-GSE V8 engine, previously used in the Lexus RC F GT3, ensuring high performance on the track.
