Carlos Sainz is working diligently to build a strong relationship with his new race engineer, Gaetan Jego, after joining the Williams team in 2025. This focus on communication and collaboration follows an unfortunate incident in the Australian Grand Prix, where Sainz missed a valuable opportunity to work with Jego in actual race conditions.

The Spanish driver joined Williams after his contract with Ferrari expired, forcing him to seek a new team following Lewis Hamilton’s decision to move to Ferrari. Sainz will join Alex Albon at Williams starting in 2025.

In the Australian Grand Prix, Albon managed to achieve a remarkable result by finishing fifth, while Sainz was forced to retire after a first-lap incident in wet conditions. Sainz explained to the media in China that he intends to re-analyze the Australian accident with Jego to strengthen their relationship and cooperation.

When asked if he was facing similar challenges to those Hamilton is experiencing in adapting to his new engineer at Ferrari, Sainz replied, “The only difference is that I wasn’t able to have a race with such communication complexity in Australia, and therefore I missed an opportunity to build a stronger relationship with my engineer.”

He added, “We were just talking about this. We need to analyze this race together as if I had actually driven it, because these types of races are where I can make a difference as a driver if my engineer helps me read the situation well. We could have achieved a good result like Alex.”

He continued, “If we communicate well, we can go back to the basics and review this race as if I had driven it, to make sure we learned from it. We missed a great opportunity to capitalize on this race. There are still 23 races left, so there will be many opportunities, but this race was a valuable lesson.”

Sainz is now preparing for the second round of the 2025 season at the Chinese Grand Prix, where the first sprint race of the season will be held, meaning Sainz will have only one practice session to prepare for a busy weekend.

Context Adjustment:

The context has been adjusted to clarify that Sainz’s focus on building his relationship with his new engineer is part of preparing for the new season with Williams, rather than as part of existing problems. The focus has also been placed on the importance of communication and collaboration between the driver and the engineer in Formula 1 races, especially in changing conditions.
