The Safewards Initiative – Canberra

Introduction to Safewards Program

The Safewards program is an innovative approach designed to create a more positive environment in hospital wards. It aims to support both staff and patients by implementing strategies that enhance safety and reduce conflict.

Expansion of Safewards Across Canberra

Under the Nurses and Midwives Towards a Safer Culture ‘The Next Steps’ Strategy, Safewards has been introduced in four wards at Canberra Hospital and North Canberra Hospital. These wards utilize various tools to mitigate occupational violence and restrictive practices. Additionally, the program is set to expand to four more wards at University of Canberra Hospital starting in September 2024.

Key Components of Safewards

Safewards incorporates evidence-based activities to foster a supportive environment:

  • Mutual Expectations: Establishing clear agreements between staff and patients about their expectations.
  • Positive Support: Finding constructive ways to assist patients during times of distress.
  • Sensitive Communication: Providing support to patients and their families when they receive difficult or unexpected news.

Laura’s Experience with Safewards

Laura, a registered nurse at North Canberra Hospital, is actively involved in a ward that has implemented Safewards. Her team has introduced a new initiative known as the ‘sunflower tool’ or ‘know each other’ initiative. This tool allows staff, visitors, and patients to share personal details such as hobbies, favorite TV shows, or pets. The aim is to foster stronger relationships and enhance understanding and safety within the ward.

Impact of the ‘Sunflower Tool’

Laura shared an example of the tool’s effectiveness: “After introducing the tool, we had a patient’s family fill out some of their information. We later used this information as a prompt to help the patient during episodes of agitation due to their advanced dementia and post-traumatic stress disorder.”

By using familiar nicknames and personal details, Laura’s team was able to comfort the patient more effectively, demonstrating the tool’s value in building therapeutic relationships.

Benefits of the Safewards Initiative

The ‘sunflower tool’ promotes a care approach that is:

  • Person-Centred: Focusing on individual needs and preferences.
  • Trauma-Informed: Understanding and addressing the impact of trauma on patients.
  • Recovery-Oriented: Supporting patients in their journey towards recovery.

Research and Future Plans

Research indicates that Safewards interventions significantly support staff, patients, and carers, reducing potential conflicts, rates of occupational violence, and restrictive practices. By the end of June 2026, the Safewards program is expected to be implemented in 12 wards across Canberra Health Services, further enhancing safety and positive interactions within the hospital environment.
