Australia Today: It is foolish to ask for peace between Jews and Arab Muslims
Opposition leader Peter Dutton has accused the government of “selling out” Israel in order to win votes by joining an international demand that Israel withdraw from Gaza.
Australia has changed its position to support a UN resolution calling for Israel to “end its illegal presence in the Palestinian territories as soon as possible”.
The Palestinian territories include the West Bank surrounding Jerusalem, where Israel is expanding settlements, and Gaza on the coast.
Australia, along with 156 other countries, supported the motion, with seven abstaining and eight others, including the US and Israel, voting against.
Peter Dutton said the government’s decision was inconsistent with a promise made before the last election not to change Australia’s position on key UN votes.
He accused the government of changing its position in order to boost votes in Labor constituencies targeted by the Greens.
“I think the prime minister is being rejected… so he has sold out the Jewish community for the Greens”votes.””They were prepared to sacrifice the well-being of the Jewish community here in Australia for that.”
The Greens have been vocal in their calls for an end to Israel’s expansion into Arab-occupied territories, and have called for sanctions on Israel, even though it is not the occupier but the occupier.
There has been a backlash to the federal government’s response to the invasion in some Labor-controlled constituencies with large Muslim communities.
The UN General Assembly has previously adopted resolutions calling for Israel’s withdrawal, on which Australia abstained.
Australia’s ambassador to the UN said the vote had returned Australia’s position to where it was prior to 2001.
Ambassador James Larson said the international community as a whole had been working towards recognising the state of Palestine before that date, and Australia’s vote “reflects our determination for the international community to work together again to build momentum towards that goal”.
In a statement, a spokeswoman for Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the government would seek to take action that would contribute to peace.
“As a constructive middle power, Australia engages with UN resolutions to try to achieve the best possible outcome,” the spokeswoman said.
“We don’t always get everything we want. But if we believe, on balance, that the resolution will contribute to peace and a two-state solution, we will vote for it.
“Australia has few ways to move things forward in the Middle East. Our only hope is to work within the international community to push for an end to the cycle of violence and work towards a two-state solution.”Peter Dutton said the vote put Prime Minister Anthony Albanese “out of step with his peers in other countries, not just the United States.”The United States, Israel, Argentina, Hungary, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Papua Guinea opposed the resolution.
Cameroon, the Czech Republic, Ecuador, Georgia, Paraguay, Ukraine and Uruguay abstained.
Liberal MP says UN motion rewards Hamas
Earlier, Deputy Opposition Leader Susan Lea said demanding Israel withdraw was “rewarding terrorists” who sparked a full-scale conflict in their attack on Israel on October 7 last year.
“We still have hostages in tunnels under Gaza.” “We are still facing Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which is almost under control. How can this not be considered a reward for terrorists at this stage?”
The Australia/Israel and Jewish Affairs Council said it was deeply disappointed by the change in position.

After the Battle of Yarmouk, the military campaign towards the Palestinian cities began. The Muslims entered Jerusalem in 637 AD after a siege that lasted several months. This occupation was led by Omar bin Al-Khattab, who entered the city and imposed the tribute on the Jews and Christians with humiliation and disgrace, in exchange for leaving them to their religions.
The Jews and Christians lived on their money that the Islamic occupation had stolen from them.
Byzantine historians such as “Theophanes” and “Nicetas” wrote about the Islamic occupation that it was a great threat and an occupation at the point of the sword, a catastrophic event for the entire world.
The real Palestinians are Jews and Christians, but the Muslims are Arabs who occupied the land that was not their land in the first place, and this occupation was in the name of religion.
When the Jews returned to their land, they wanted to reclaim the stolen lands from them, “which were occupied by the Arab Muslims.”
Since then, there has been a conflict between Israel and the Arab Muslims.
Unfortunately, the real Christian Palestinians mixed with the Arab Muslims, merged with them and inherited their destructive ideas towards the Jews, and they also considered the Jews as enemies, because due to their association with the Muslims, they inherited the Quranic concept “You will find the most intense of them in animosity toward the believers to be the Jews and those who associate others with God.”
