Novak Djokovic, ranked fourth, achieved his first victory in nearly two months by defeating Australian Rinky Hijikata 6-0, 7-6 (7-1) in the second round of the Miami Masters tournament. Djokovic, a six-time Miami champion and holder of 24 Grand Slam titles, will now face Argentina’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli in the next round.

Djokovic’s last win was at the Australian Open, where he overcame Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals in January.

Casper Ruud of Norway, ranked fifth and the 2022 runner-up, needed three sets to secure his first match win, advancing to the third round with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic. Ruud’s next opponent will be either France’s Corentin Moutet or Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo.

In a surprising upset, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, ranked seventh, was eliminated in the second round, falling to Spain’s Jaume Munar 2-6, 3-6. This loss ends Medvedev’s bid for a second Miami Open title, having won it in 2023. This marks the first time Medvedev has lost to a player outside the top 20 in this tournament, where he had reached at least the quarterfinals in his previous four appearances.

Following his first singles win since October 2022 on Wednesday, Australia’s Nick Kyrgios’s comeback was cut short in the second round with a 6-7 (3-7), 0-6 loss to Russia’s Karen Khachanov. Khachanov will now face Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov, ranked fifteenth, who defeated Italy’s Federico China 6-1, 6-4.

Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti, ranked sixteenth, also advanced with a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 victory over France’s Quentin Halys. Musetti will next play against Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, ranked nineteenth, who defeated Australia’s Tristan Schoolkate 6-4, 6-4.”
