Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated on Sunday that his country would consider participating in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine if the situation allows, though he emphasized that it is too soon for any deployment.

Albanese discussed the matter with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday. The UK, along with France, is working to build a “coalition of the willing” to support and enforce any future ceasefire in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“Our nations stand firmly in support of Ukraine. However, it is premature to talk about peacekeeping forces when peace has not yet been established,” Albanese said at a press conference.

He reiterated that Australia is open to the idea of contributing to a peacekeeping mission if conditions permit.

Additionally, Australia will send a senior representative to a high-level military meeting in Paris on Tuesday, where defense leaders will discuss continued support for Ukraine.

European countries have been ramping up their assistance for Ukraine as former U.S. President Donald Trump explores direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin to end Moscow’s three-year-long invasion.

Several European nations have already expressed willingness to deploy peacekeeping troops as part of a broader security guarantee for Ukraine.
