Australia has received its first shipment of the mobile HIMARS rocket system, a move aimed at bolstering its defense capabilities and changing the dynamics of the battlefield.
The acquisition of this advanced U.S. system, which has proven effective in Ukraine, comes as part of Australia’s 2023 Strategic Defense Review. This review recommended a shift towards long-range deterrence to address growing security challenges, particularly the increasing military capabilities of China.
The Australian government allocated AUD 1.6 billion to expedite the delivery of this system, with the first two of 42 vehicles arriving from the United States.
Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles emphasized that this step is part of significant investments to equip the Australian Defense Force with the necessary capabilities to protect the country.
The HIMARS system is capable of striking targets at a distance of over 500 kilometers, effectively increasing the range of Australian ground forces tenfold, according to Defense Industry Minister Pat Conroy.
Australia’s defense strategy also includes equipping its naval forces with nuclear-powered submarines capable of launching cruise missiles, further enhancing its long-range deterrence capabilities.
