Nick Street, a Tasmanian MP and government minister, has announced his resignation from the Cabinet due to mental health reasons. Street, who has previously spoken openly about his struggles with mental health, stated that the decision “has been coming for some time.”
Continuing as an MP
Despite stepping down from the ministry, Street will continue serving as the Member for Franklin. He explained that his initial plan was to reassess his situation by the end of the parliamentary year, but the upcoming Cabinet reshuffle prompted him to resign now.
Upcoming Cabinet Reshuffle
Premier Jeremy Rockliff is expected to announce a Cabinet reshuffle soon, which will see new faces replacing both Nick Street and former Deputy Premier Michael Ferguson.
Mental Health Struggles
Speaking about his mental health, Street revealed that he feels about 75 to 80 percent recovered but emphasized that the decision was made to prioritize his well-being and the stability of the government. He described his choice as “perhaps the most selfish decision” he has made in politics but hopes people understand the reasons behind it.
Broad Support
Premier Rockliff praised Nick Street for his significant contribution to the government, stating that Street’s decision was solely personal. He also commended Street for speaking out about his mental health challenges, noting that such openness helps reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
Street’s Future in Parliament
Though stepping down from the ministry, Street will remain in Parliament and continue advising the Premier. Rockliff is set to announce his restructured government on Sunday.
